Key Events In Guatemala’s first democratic era: 1944–1954
In 1944, the Guatemalan people—led by Jacobo Árbenz and Javier Arana—rose up against and overthrew dictator Jorge Ubico, after which the nation held its first election. Ten years later, democracy was through, and a dictator was once again in power—because of the American CIA.
